I said in a tweet on the way to the track that I think Bristol is as close as you can get to SX racing. The track is just unbelievable and if you are any type of a motorsports race fan I think Bristol is one of those things you have to experience at least once in your lifetime. I have always felt pretty comfortable at this track, it is a little intimidating at first, but once you get out there I feel you pick it up pretty quick. Ahead of the race I made a few appearances for the track and wasn’t too surprised to find lots of fans already set up in their camping spots on Tuesday! It was great to meet the fans and after making our rounds outside we headed indoors for an autograph session for the ticket holders and then even sold some tickets at the track ticket window.

I really look forward to this race every year. The area around the Michigan race track is really beautiful country and kind of reminds me of the area around Millville. The track is really wide and fun to race on because there are lots of lanes and plenty of options which usually makes for good racing. The test we had is still paying dividends, we unloaded strong and I was looking forward to the race. It was also cool to have Jeff Stanton come by for the race. He brought his wife and son and it was great catching up with him.

I have always had enormous respect for our men and women of the US armed forces for the great bravery they have and the sacrifices they make, fighting for our country and freedom. I had a great opportunity to attend the Walter Reed hospital for injured troops last week for one of the last tours ever that will go thru there until it closes next month. Thanks to NASCAR this would not have been possible. Words cannot describe the experiences I had and the inspiration I felt after leaving there that night. We started out in the pediatric unit which is available to all soldiers’ children that currently serve in our military or have served in our military. We met children of all ages that all were there for many different reasons. As we spent time with them and talked them we gave them autographs and goodie bags and took pictures with them, it was so cool to see the smile on these kids faces as they reaped with joy just to have visitors and get some cool little gifts. This was special to me because I have two children of my own. From there we made our way to the MATC unit, where the recovering soldiers that had been injured in war were, performing there rehabilitation, most of them amputees, some missing one limb and others missing all of them. As we were making are way there we stopped at a few rooms to visit some soldiers that had just had some surgeries and chatted with them and listened to their story of what had happened.

da Poconos

So the trickiest part of this weekend wasn’t the track but the weather, there is nothing more boring than waiting to race when it’s raining. like I said on my twitter post but it wasn’t so we waited and waited and eventually got back to racing the next morning. It was a frustrating race for me because I felt like we had em in the corners but on the straightaways we were where we needed to be. On the bright side I feel we made the truck better so I hope we can build on that for Michigan.

Frustrating is the only word to describe how my race ended up in Indy. I am still mad as I sit here and write this days later but that is how it goes sometimes. It was great to run good and I have to look at that part and feel good about the team and our effort. We drove from the back to the front and put ourselves in a great spot for a solid top 10 and at least I know we did a good job racing. We will work to make sure the mistake with the fuel doesn’t happen again and move on to Pocono.
