After last year’s first RCU event was held overseas we knew we had something special going in Europe. The great turnout was matched by the enthusiasm of the riders and we felt it was important to try and make the trip back to FatCat. None of us were disappointed when we returned to yet another great turnout and awesome weather. Jamie and Naomi Dobb did another great job organizing the event and it was great to see the event grow even bigger than last year.
We arrived on Wednesday to sunny skies and what everyone was telling us was an English “heat wave” now obviously where I come from I wouldn’t call it a heat wave but none the less I was happy to see sunny skies again. We went straight to the track to check out the new configuration and start laying out the sections we would be working on. The track crew at Fat Cat did another great job prepping the track and I couldn’t wait to get started on Thursday.
We followed our regular schedule and it felt good to get out on the bike and turn some laps. I could tell from our warm up session that we had some really good riders at this year’s event and that it was going to be a good couple days of riding. We had another great group of instructors this year including Jeff Emig, Jamie Dobb and Tommy Searle was able to make some time to come help us again.
Unfortunately Jeff Stanton’s dad had an accident the week before we left so we had to find a fill in instructor and fortunately we were able to get Dean Wilson to come help us out. Dean did a great job as a first time instructor and I was pumped to have him helping us.
Following our normal routine we had 3 hour long sessions in the morning before breaking for lunch. I have to say they killed it again with the lunches this year! I didn’t think it could be better than last year but it was. We followed lunch with a Q&A with the instructors which is always good fun and gives Fro another chance to tell stories. Lol.
After lunch we had our group photo and then headed out for the last 2 sections of the day before the free ride. I was really impressed with the level of talent we had this year. It is good to see the sport has some great younger talent coming up and that they have a real willing to want to learn. I got a lot of the same feedback from the other instructors as well.
After our graduation ceremony we had a huge hog roast for all of the riders and their guests and signed a bunch of autographs for everyone before heading back to the hotel for some much needed rest before we got up and did it all over again.
On Friday we got up and back out to the track and I have to admit it was a little warmer than the day before. We had another great day of riding and learning. The other cool part about our event this year is that we tied it in with the British Youth National event being held that weekend at Fat Cat.
I was able to give some of our RCU students a special track walk the night before the race helping show them how to use what they learned at the RCU and apply it to their racing the next day. I also gave them some advice on what I thought would be helpful to them while racing that weekend. While I was doing track walk we had Dean and Fro give a little talk to the racers who were there and they were also able to answer some questions for them about racing.
We headed back to the track on Saturday to check it out and see how our students were doing. From what we could see and what we heard back from our students they for sure learned a lot and were applying it to their racing. That for me was one of the coolest parts of the week was to see and hear those riders improve their skills. That’s what it is all about and that is why we do the RCU.
We headed to Jamie’s after the race for a little meeting on next year’s events. All I can tell you is to stay tuned to the Ricky Carmichael University website for info and details on next year’s events. We are looking at new locations for the RCU and hopefully we will see some of you at our school next year.
Thanks to all of our students for coming out to this year’s RCU UK Campus and also to all of the sponsors who also came out to support us this year. Without them the event wouldn’t happen so make sure you check them out and also tell them thank you for supporting our school. They are listed below and also check out the links to the photos and videos from the event.
